Week 8: #18 Social Networking: Making friends in the comfort of your own home

I found "Rate My Space" fun because I love decorating but I still have reservations about communicating in an open forum. I LOVE email but hate it when I get junk from people I don't know. I don't think this form is right for me.

Week 7: #17 Blog about Technology

Since Horizon has been down for a day and a half, I think this is a good time to talk about what our particular technology means to us at HCPL. We all take this wonderful tool for granted, using it like our third hand. When it goes down, which isn't often, we come squarely up against the way we USED to do things...slowly and laboriously.

The other major point is that it is our tech staff who makes this possible. We tend to think of our computers as entities but humans make them go. Thanks to all who got little sleep last night so that we could serve our customers today. We appreciate you!

Week 7: #16 So what's in a wiki?

I created a login account for myself on the iHCPL wiki and added by blog to the favorites blog page.

M. Franklin did a wiki for the Summer Reading Program. It's purpose was to assist new children's librarians. Since our branches are so diverse, this was an excellent way to compile lots of information which reflected all our branches.

Week 6: #15 On Library 2.0 & Web 2.0

I wish I could look fifty years into the future. I'm sure the services offered by our libraries will be unimaginable.

Library 2.0 speaks of a modernization of libraries but I wonder if that is not what we are experiencing right now. Technological change is a part of our lives. Service to our patrons is the keystone of our lives as librarians. We change our services to serve. Technology naturally follows us. This is a George Orwell moment.

Week 6: #14 Getting not-so-technical with Technorati

Taking a look at Technorati. Did advanced search by typing "Learning 2.0" as keywork search in Blog posts. Got 'No posts in English with some authority containing Learning 2.0 in blogs tagged Blog posts." Tried in 'tags' and got 666 posts tagged Learning 2.0 and tried the Blog Directory and got 705 blogs about Learning 2.0. Explored Popular blogs. Amazing amount of information on diverse subjects.

Week 6: #13 Tagging makes the web 2.0 world go round

Registered with Del.icio.us. Tried tutorial but it was too fuzzy. Explored the 'del.icio.us' tag which was saved by 16310 other people and saw comments, some pro-some con. It would be an interesting tool for research and a good way to create bookmarks I can access from home.

Week 5: #12 The Library Elf will remind you!

The Elf is down and I am sad! Reminding is a good thing! I will come back to visit when he is ready to play!

Week 5: #11 A Thing about Library Thing

What a fast and easy way to pull up a favorite author's books! Library Thing is just the tool for me!

Week 4: #9 Finding Feeds

Bloglines is certainly friendlier than Feedster, Topix and Syndic8 although Feedster's Widget looks like fun. Technorati seems the most complicated to me. I did enjoy Topix People Reading, Talking, Editing. CNN and Reuters also look promising.

Week 4: #8 Make Life Really Simple- RSS and Newsreader

Wow! I can spend the day reading about animals and art and health and gardening and on and on! This is so much fun!
